Sometimes when the kid looks in the mirror there are gangsters in his eyes, resonances of the small monsters who live and thrive in the spaces between his bones and in the pauses he takes between one breath and the next.

One day his marrow will freeze or he will stop breathing and the gangsters will be gone.

The small monsters, however, will continue to exist in his rotting flesh and the gangsters will take root and expand their creed in another part of the city.
